How to Troubleshoot Adjustable Base Problems

Man on adjustable base

Your adjustable base is designed to make your nights (and mornings) more comfortable. But like any piece of technology, it may occasionally act up. Don’t worry — most issues are easy to fix yourself. Here’s a simple troubleshooting guide to get your base back in working order.

Troubleshooting Adjustable Base Issues

The Remote Isn't Working

  1. Check the batteries: Even slightly weak batteries can cause issues — sometimes only a few functions respond. Replacing with fresh batteries often fixes it right away.
  2. Re-sync the remote:  Follow the instructions in your user manual to pair it again.
  3. Test from different distances: Make sure nothing is blocking the signal.

💡  Tip: Keep extra batteries in your nightstand so you can swap them quickly.

Plug in your adjustable base

The Base Won't Move at All

  1. Check to see if the Green light is lit on the Power box/AC Adapter: If unlit, check the power cord to ensure it's securely plugged into the wall. Check the power adapter to ensure all cables are secure.

  2. Check the outlet type: Ensure the outlet isn’t controlled by a wall switch, and plug the base into a surge protector power strip for consistent power.

  3. Reset the base: If the green light is on and the lights on the remote are alo lit up, a simple reset can alleviate many problems with receivers under the base. Unplug the base for 1 minute, then plug it back in.

  4. Child Lock may be activated: If the remote backlight flashes when you press a button (instead of staying lit briefly), the child lock is engaged. To unlock:

    1. Leggett & Platt bases – Press and hold the lock button (padlock icon or labeled “LOCK”) until the remote lights flash.
    2. ErgoMotion bases – Press head up + head down together for ~10 seconds to lock. Press foot up + foot down together for ~10 seconds to unlock. The remote lights will flash to confirm.
    3. Newer ErgoMotion/Rio bases – Press head up + foot up together for ~3–4 seconds to lock. To unlock: press head down + foot down for ~3–4 seconds (remote flashes), then immediately press head up + foot up for ~3–4 seconds (remote flashes again).

💡 Tip: If your base suddenly stops moving, the child lock is often the culprit.

The Base Moves Slowly or Unevenly

  1. Check for obstructions: Make sure nothing (pet toys, bedding, or cords) is caught underneath.

Strange Noises When Moving

  1. Check the floor surface: Bases can creak if the floor is uneven — try shifting it slightly.
  2. Tighten loose bolts: Secure any parts that feel loose.
  3. Normal hum vs. abnormal grinding: A soft hum is ok. Loud grinding or scraping means it’s time to call for service.

Massage Feature Isn’t Working

  1. Confirm the setting: Some remotes require holding the massage button for a few seconds.
  2. Check the remote display: Look for icons that show the massage is on.
  3. Reset the base: As with movement issues, unplugging and re-plugging often helps.
