Answering all Your Questions About Dog Beds

New Dog Bed

For most dog owners, a recurring question is: should I let my dog sleep in bed with me? There are certainly arguments to be made on both sides. It’s worth noting that if you ask a health or medical professional, they’ll give you a resounding no. The main reason why they don't want you to sleep with your dog is that your favorite furry family member may disturb you. Your sleep is too important to your health and happiness to compromise!

In a survey, 53 percent of dog owners said their pet tends to wake them at least once on any given night. It isn’t because he or she is trying to, of course. Dog and human sleep cycles differ. This can affect the quality of sleep you get when lying next to a loveable little creature waking up more often than you. If letting your dog into your bed at night hurts your sleep satisfaction in any way, don’t do it. There’s no shame in it! If you prefer not to have a dog climb on top of you and your mattress, something you want to treat with great care and not have stains on, that’s understandable. If you sleep better solo, stick to it. There is another great option that your dog will also love, a high-quality dog bed!

If you haven’t yet thought to buy a dog bed, you probably have quite a few questions before you make the purchase. We’re here to answer them! Below are some of the most common questions we hear regarding dog beds:

Do dogs need beds?

Yes! Dogs sleep between 12 to 18 hours a day, so they need a comfy bed to snooze on just like you do. Although you might find your pup occasionally, or often, snuggled at your side during the night, dogs need to have a bed to call their own. Just like you like having a place of your own to rest and decompress, your dog does too. To him or her, this will be more like a bedroom than a simple bed. You can give your four-legged family member a cozy and supportive place to rest their paws and lay their heads with the perfect dog bed.

Will my dog actually use it?

The short answer is yes. The long answer is that you may need to take a few strategic steps to introduce it in a way your dog understands. If your dog already has a bed he or she regularly sleeps in, you’ll want to remove this to avoid the temptation of continuing to use it. The first way to get your dog used to their new bed is by using a scent to make the bed more comfortable. If he or she currently sleeps on an old blanket, put the blanket in the new dog bed! Most often, this will be enough on its own but sometimes you will need to do a little more to encourage the idea that this bed is now theirs. Associate their new bed with whatever they love. For some dogs, this may be cuddles and belly scratches while on the bed, for other dogs this means treats while on the bed. With the right selection, the dog bed can be calming for them.

Can a cat use a dog bed?

Of course! We most often call these dog beds, but that is not to say only a dog can use one. If you order a small dog bed for a cat, he or she will probably like it very much.

How do I choose the right pet bed?

Begin by finding the right size, not too big and not too tight. Then, choose a material your dog will find cozy and snuggly. Just like you, your dog will probably find memory foam to feel very comfortable.

What size should I get?

We sell dog pets in Small, Medium, and Large sizes. To measure your dog, measure from the tip of their nose to the base of their tail while they are standing up on all four feet. Add roughly six to 12 inches to make sure they have plenty of space. This should be the length of your dog bed.

What is the best material for my dog beds?

Just like there are many options for a new mattress or new pillow, you have choices when it comes to your dog bed as well. We recommend a memory foam pet bed with machine-washable, removable cover. This bed will be comfortable for your dog. It will also be durable and easy to clean, something you’re sure to appreciate!

Does my dog need an orthopedic pet bed?

Orthopedic pet beds can be especially useful for older pets, for the same reasons as orthopedic beds are great for older people! They're also recommended for larger dogs or injured pets who really need the extra support and cushioning.

How can I clean the dog bed?

Your dog is going to get a lot of hair, dirt, and drool on this bed. Unlike your own mattress, which you want to keep stain and spill free, this is okay for a dog bed! While memory foam itself is not washable, the best pet beds have covers that are easy to remove and wash in your machine. You can also easily wipe or dab a recent stain to remove it.

What if my dog digs and chew on it?

These dog beds are very durable because of their covers. They have been tested for durability and quality. Go ahead and let your pup enjoy the bed however he or she sees fit!

Is the dog bed going to smell bad?

Because the covers are easy to remove and wash in your machine, you won't need to worry about odors. If and when it gets stinky, simply remove the cover and toss it in the machine!

Where should I put the dog bed?

Watch your dog to see where he or she likes to spend time and sleep. Most dogs like to be near their human family, so try to find a warm spot in your bedroom. Be sure to keep it visible, but out of the way of where you’ll be stepping at night.
