What Is a Hybrid Mattress?

Your body requires adequate sleep to function. The National Sleep Foundation recommends at least seven hours for optimal health and energy. Part of obtaining that sleep is having a supportive yet comfortable mattress. As you're selecting one, you should know the answer to what is a hybrid mattress? At City Mattress, we have an array of mattresses to choose from, including hybrid mattresses.

Understanding a Hybrid Mattress

To explore what a hybrid mattress is, you must first have some background knowledge about innerspring and memory mattresses.

  • Innerspring mattresses have either open or pocketed coils that comprise the base of the mattress, and they give the mattress support. The fabric and any foam in it enhance the comfort aspect. The concept was patented in 1865, and these mattresses became staples in homes until the 1960s when memory foam arose.

  • Memory foam was invented by NASA to improve safety for astronauts during space travel. It was meant to absorb shock and ease pressure, which would reduce the risk of injury when the shuttle launched or reentered the atmosphere. This material also adapts to the human body, allowing for personalized support.

  • Eventually, memory foam mattresses were produced by various companies and became mainstream. Consumers appreciated that these mattresses hugged their bodies to provide support where they needed it. The material also doesn’t have much motion transfer. Therefore, when your partner rolls over or gets up early, you won't be disturbed. When you lie down, you sink into the foam, and it cradles you, making for a cozy experience for you.

  • Neither type of mattress is ideal for every person. Each has certain downfalls. For instance, memory foam mattresses of the past would get too warm for many people. Moreover, an innerspring mattress has high motion transfer, so you can be affected greatly if your significant other moves a lot in their sleep.

  • A hybrid mattress takes parts from each type of mattress while correcting some of the downfalls of each kind of mattress. Think of it as the best of both worlds because you get the support and firmness of an innerspring mattress. However, you also get the softness and comfort of a memory foam mattress.

  • Sometimes, the hybrid mattress uses a different material for the comfort level, such as latex. The polyfoam is typically better if you prefer a firmer sleeping area. Latex is usually more responsive and it'll still contour to your body well.

Benefits of Hybrid Mattresses

  • Motion Transfer

The memory foam ensures the motion transfer of this mattress is less than that of an innerspring mattress on its own. While an innerspring mattress doesn’t contour well to you, a hybrid mattress will because of the memory foam.

  • Mattress Support

Hybrid mattresses also have longer-lasting support than innerspring mattresses as a result of their layers that prevent you from sinking into the mattress too far. Moreover, when a mattress has a coil system, it has better airflow than one that consists of foam. This means that an innerspring mattress won’t heat up as much while you are resting.

  • Cooling Features

You can also find hybrid mattresses composed of cooling foam to prevent this problem from happening as well. Some even have advanced cooling systems like certain Casper mattresses options.

  • Mattress Longevity

A hybrid mattress with both coils and foam tends to last longer than either one on its own. The coils plus the foam provide it with extra support, so the springs aren’t withstanding all the weight placed on the bed each night by itself. The way to get the most longevity out of a hybrid mattress is to choose one with high-quality foam, like you might find in a Serta mattress option. Hybrid mattresses are also known for their durability and premium performance, especially when designed with high-quality materials.

City Mattress’ best-selling PranaSleep Karma Elite Hybrid and PranaSleep Karma Select Hybrid are great examples, combining advanced coil systems with thoughtfully layered comfort materials to deliver consistent support, pressure relief, and airflow. These hybrid designs help prevent excessive sink while maintaining comfort, making them a long-lasting option for sleepers who want both structure and cushioning.

Composition of a Hybrid Mattress

Though each brand and even model is slightly different from one another, the general construction of a hybrid mattress is the same. When discussing a hybrid mattress, know that it has three main layers.

  • The base layer that acts as the foundation for the bed. It’s made from foam and usually only about an inch thick. This portion of the mattress is for stability and padding purposes.

  • The second layer on top of the base adds support because it has the innersprings. It has coils and pocket-wrapped springs for firmness and support – two traits that have made innerspring mattresses so popular for so long.

  • The third and final layer, located on top, is for comfort. Typically, this layer is 3 or 4 inches thick and consists of memory or latex foam.

Types of Coils Used in Hybrid Mattresses

Most of these mattresses, like a Nectar mattress, use individually wrapped coils that offer superior cooling compared to other options without any special features specifically for cooling. These are often called pocketed coils, and they provide a high level of support and pressure relief. You can even receive zoned support that’s responsive to your unique pressure points.

  • Microcoils

Microcoils are coils situated under the top layer. They’re specifically for support and breathability, but unlike pocketed coils, these ones are tiny. In most cases, they aren’t the main support system. They serve the purpose of being a transition layer.

  • Bonnell Coils

Bonnell coils aren’t used often, but they still appear in some mattresses. These look like hourglasses and are all interconnected. Rather than supporting different parts of your body with targeted levels of support, Bonnell coils move as one unit that supplies consistent support.

  • Offset Coils

Offset coils are another option that’s not used frequently. They’re similar to Bonnell coils because they move as one unit. However, they have a hinged design that contours better to your body. These coils tend to move more independently than Bonnell ones.

  • Continuous Coils

Continuous coils are another option, and they’re made of rows using one continuous wire. This option is incredibly strong due to its unified structure. You receive the benefit of this type lasting longer than other options.

Length of Time Hybrid Mattresses Usually Last

If you’re deciding if a hybrid mattress is right for you, durability and longevity are probably at the top of your priority list because you want to get your money’s worth. You’ll want to compare by reading the reviews from previous users and take into consideration what the manufacturer specifies about the life span of that particular model.

On average, most hybrid mattresses last 10 to 13 years. Your weight and how you care for the mattress affect how long it lasts.

Expense Comparison

Quality is one of the main factors when it comes to price. A high-end innerspring, memory foam or hybrid is naturally going to be more costly. You’ll also pay more for mattresses that have extra features.

In general, however, innerspring mattresses are usually the most affordable option as they have a basic design with less comfort material. Memory foam is typically the next-most expensive because these tend to have a more complex construction than innersprings. Hybrids are often more expensive than both options, but they generally aren’t much pricier than memory foam mattresses.

Who a Hybrid Mattress Is For

Hybrid mattresses combine the support of innerspring coils with the comfort of foam layers, making them a versatile option for many sleepers. They’re especially well-suited for:

  • Light sleepers with a restless partner – Hybrid mattresses help reduce motion transfer, so you’re less likely to feel movement when your partner shifts during the night.

  • People with joint or back pain – The combination of coils and foam provides consistent support and helps keep the spine in proper ergonomic alignment.

  • Back, side, and combination sleepers – Hybrids offer balanced support and pressure relief across multiple sleep positions.

  • Sleepers who want both support and comfort – These mattresses deliver the sturdy feel of an innerspring mattress with the contouring comfort of foam.

  • Hot sleepers – Many hybrid mattresses include cooling features, and the coil system promotes airflow to help regulate temperature.

If you’ve struggled to find the right balance of comfort and support, a hybrid mattress may be a strong option to consider.

What Is Hybrid Mattress Care Like?

The maintenance of a mattress may determine if it’s the right fit for you. If something requires too much care to keep it in good condition, you may not want to deal with it. Poor maintenance can shorten a mattress’s lifespan, leading to discomfort and costly early replacement. To keep a hybrid mattress in good, functioning condition:

  • Rotate the mattress every 3–6 months
Turn it 180 degrees to prevent one side from wearing out faster than the other. Do not flip it, since hybrid mattresses have different layers on the top and bottom.

  • Use proper support
Place the mattress on a solid slatted base or bed frame that adequately supports it. Slats should be no more than 3 inches apart.

  • Clean spills immediately
Use a mild detergent, such as dish or laundry soap. Do not soak the foam, as excess moisture can promote mold growth.

  • Vacuum regularly
Vacuuming removes dust, skin flakes, and debris that contribute to allergies and odors. Over time, accumulated dust can gradually wear down the mattress.

  • Discourage jumping on the bed
Jumping can damage the coils and cause foam to rip if coils become bent or destroyed.

  • Review the owner’s manual
If you have questions about care, consult the manual. If you no longer have it, it’s often available on the manufacturer’s website.

Proper care helps extend the lifespan of your hybrid mattress and maintain its comfort and support.
