How to Make a Mattress Softer

You’ve had a long day. Your daily responsibilities are over, you’ve had a healthy dinner, and even gone through your calming bedtime routine. It’s now finally time to climb into your slumber oasis. You pull back the covers, get into bed and… lie on top of a mattress that feels far too stiff to fall asleep on. Oh no! While you certainly need your mattress to be supportive enough to keep your spine aligned all night long, this doesn’t mean it needs to feel too stiff or even firm at all.

Our Tips to Help Make Your Mattress Feel Softer

If your mattress doesn’t feel soft enough, you may find it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. Your body needs to feel refreshed and rejuvenated, so an uncomfortable mattress isn’t something to try and “deal with.” After all, you spend a third of your life on this mattress! This is why we’ve compiled a list of a few tips for how to make your mattress feel a bit softer.

Break in Your Mattress

If your mattress that feels too firm is newly arrived to your bedroom, this is the easiest to fix because you don’t have to do anything at all! The new mattress delivered to your home is brand new. Even though it’s the same make and model as what you liked in the store, a floor-model mattress has probably been laid on dozens if not hundreds of times. It’s not going to feel exactly the same right away, because it’s not the same! Your new mattress is going to take a little bit of time until it feels similar. Don’t worry; it’ll get there! We recommend giving your new mattress a full month to soften up. After 30 nights, you’ll have a much better idea as to whether the mattress is the right one for you or not. You have a full 90 nights to decide, so don’t rush a decision this important!

Add a Mattress Topper or Mattress Pad

If your mattress isn’t brand new but still doesn’t feel quite soft enough, you may not need an entirely new mattress. Consider adding a mattress topper or mattress pad to your existing mattress. These products add extra comfort and softness to a mattress that is already good but just a bit too firm. As long as your current mattress is in good condition, adding an extra layer of plush often does the trick! Mattress toppers are available in a variety of materials, so you can choose a topper that’s tailored to your comfort needs. We have a variety we recommend you look into, like the City Mattress Egyptian Cotton Mattress Pad, Sleep Philosophy Stanton Luxury Collection Cotton Mattress Pad, Sleep Philosophy Copper-Infused Down Alternative Mattress Pad, and Sleep & Beyond Mypad® Wool Mattress Pad

Adjust the Temperature

Did you know that memory foam mattresses are affected by the temperature inside your home? If a memory foam mattress feels a bit too stiff, the true issue may be the temperature of your room. You see, memory foam is affected by heat. The colder it is, the firmer it is. This makes sense when you consider the fact that body heat is what makes this foam material more pliable, allowing it to effectively contour to the shape of your body- which is probably why you bought it in the first place. Try adjusting the thermostat to help warm your room up a bit. If you’re worried you’ll get too hot, you can always add in a temperature-controlled mattress topper or cooling mattress pad to the mix!

We hope this list helps! Don’t forget, City Mattress offers a comfort guarantee. On occasion, you simply cannot do anything to make a new mattress feel like the perfect one for you and that is okay! We want you to be more than just satisfied with your new mattress. We want you to love it! That means, after sleeping on your new mattress for about a month or so, if it still isn’t perfect, we will allow you to come back in and exchange it for another one. We encourage you to try these three tips and then reach out to your Sleep Expert if they don’t provide the soft relief you’re looking for. If your first choice wasn’t the right one, we’ll work with you to find a better option. When we say there won’t be a hassle, we mean it!
