You spend a third of your life in bed, so finding the right new mattress is key to getting the sleep your body needs. Some have said that the one third you spend on your mattress affects the other two thirds, and they’re right! Sleep is essential for health, happiness, and quality of life. Yet, not all mattresses are the same. A mattress that your mom loves may feel far too firm for you. The bed your best friend swears is like a sleep oasis makes you feel like you’re sinking in too far and getting too hot. This is precisely why you need to find the right mattress for you, one that you find comfortable and supportive. This will depend on both the position you sleep in and simply your personal preference.
The first step is visiting a nearby mattress store and trying out the beds before you buy one. Lie down on one, five, or as many different mattresses as it takes in order to find one you love. You’re not done quite yet though. As soon as your mattress is delivered, you will realize a few things. Number one, this isn’t the exact same mattress you tried out at the store- this is a brand new mattress that hasn’t been broken in. Also, you may find that sleeping all night long on it isn’t the same thing as trying it out for a few minutes. Remember, you are replacing your bed because it's old, lost its support, and just not comfortable any more. A new bed is a brand new support system for your body. It will take time for your body to adjust to this new mattress, and we want you to take the time to make a good decision. Just like buying a new pair of shoes, your mattress needs time to become comfortable! All of these reasons are exactly why a mattress trial period is so important.
Why you need to try mattresses before committing to it
As briefly mentioned above, you don’t know exactly whether or not you’ll like a mattress before you sleep on it. Even if you’ve had a similar mattress in the past, the brand is a well-known one, and someone else told you they like it- you simply won’t know for sure until you sleep on it yourself. It’s important to note that you need more than one night to know for sure. In fact, you need more than a few nights!
On occasions, a mattress isn’t quite right- not because you don’t like it but because of a small manufacturing issue. This is where your mattress warranty will be incredibly helpful. At City Mattress, we sell brands that offer some of the best mattress warranty options in the industry. For example, PranaSleep offers a 10 year full and 20 year prorated warranty on their luxury mattresses. If there’s a defect with your new PranaSleep mattress, it will be covered by the mattress warranty without issue. Other brands, including Vispring, Tempur-Pedic, and Sealy offer their own versions of a manufacturer mattress warranty.
How long should you try a mattress before making your final decision?
The new mattress delivered to your home is brand new. Even though it’s the same make and model as what you liked in the store, that mattress has probably been laid on dozens if not hundreds of times. Your new mattress is going to take a little bit of time until it feels similar. Here at City Mattress, we recommend giving your new mattress a full month. After 30 nights, you’ll have a much better idea as to whether the mattress is the right one for you or not. You have a full 90 nights to decide. Don’t rush a decision this important!
What you need to do if you want to return your mattress
Don’t worry that it’s going to be a big hassle if you decide your new mattress isn’t the right one for you. We’ll gladly exchange your mattress as part of our 90 Night Comfort Guarantee. We want you to love your mattress and sleep well for years to come. If your first choice wasn’t the right one, we’ll work with you to find a better option. We are proud of our mattress trial because it’s one of the best in the industry!
If you’re unhappy for any reason during your first 90 nights, all you need to do is reach back out to the store you purchased from. At the time of your purchase, you’ll be given contact information for the Sleep Expert who helped you. Once we know you have tried it out for about 30 nights and aren’t loving it, we’ll get to work exchanging it for an option of equal or greater value that is better for you. There is a small fee for this; between 30 and 60 nights it's a $150 and from nights 60 through 90 it is just $100.
BONUS: What happens to a mattress after you return it?
Let’s say you try out your first choice for 40 nights and you simply don’t love it the way you had hoped to. You contact your Sleep Expert and a few nights later you’re sleeping on something better suited to you. That’s great news for you and means the mattress trial worked exactly as intended. What happened to the old mattress though? Surely something that has barely been used isn’t simply thrown away!
Some brands are shipped back to the manufacturer. In other cases, the mattresses go to a clearance center. We clean, sanitize and steri-fab the mattresses and stamp the labels that they are “secondary mattresses.” Doing so keeps mattresses from landfills, making this a fantastic way to be eco-friendly. The mattresses in the clearance stores are marked down to incredible prices because they are no longer considered brand new. In fact, clearance store shoppers regularly save hundreds and even thousands off the price of a new mattress. If you’ve ever slept in a hotel, you’ve spent the night on a bed that’s been slept in far more than a mattress in a clearance center. For shoppers who don’t mind the concept, it’s a fantastic way to get a top brand name mattress at a more affordable price point.
Taking advantage of your mattress trial period is so important. A mattress is a big investment, and not something you want to get wrong. With our 90 Night Comfort Guarantee, you won’t have anything to worry about!
