Why Your Sheets Might Need an Upgrade

 New Sheets

Your bedroom should be your mental oasis away from the world. Everything inside, from your mattress to your linens to the rug under your feet, should be exactly the way you love it, so you’re able to come into the room and decompress from daily life. A big part of this is whether or not your bed is both comfortable and supportive. Yes, your mattress and pillow are two very important pieces of the puzzle, but they’re not the entire thing. Have you given much thought to your sheets? If not, you may be sleeping on sheets that are in desperate need of replacing.

How Long do Sheets Last?

If you’re getting the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep a night, you’re spending one-third of your life snuggled in your sheets. It’s no wonder they wear out! Most experts recommend buying new sheets every two to three years if you’re buying sheets of standard quality. Visible signs of wear and tear include thinning, yellowing, and fading. These are the most obvious indicators your sheets are past their prime, but you might start to feel the decline as well, which can disrupt your sleep.

Like everything from cars to shoes, something of low quality will wear out and need to be replaced sooner, and something of very high quality will last longer than average. Exactly how long your sheets will last depends on several factors, including the quality of the sheets, how you do your washing, and how many sheet sets you circulate between.

Consider the following:

Buy more than one set of sheets! If you own multiple sets of bed sheets that you rotate, your sheets will last longer. This is because they are not facing the same constant wear and tear that a single set would endure from frequent washing and sleep-ins.

Do you travel often? If you frequently travel, spend the night with a partner, or fall asleep on the couch instead of your bed, your sheets aren’t getting as much wear and tear as they otherwise would. How often you’re actually sleeping in your bedding plays a major part in its longevity.

Consider your washing routine. You want to wash your sheets enough to keep them hygienic, but not so much that you wear them out early. On average, you should be laundering your sheets using a washing machine once a week or once every two weeks. If you don’t sweat or eat in bed, you probably make it to the two-week mark and extend the fibers of your sheets a bit.

Beyond a high-quality new mattress and a pillow that supports your head, your sheets are the next most important bedding essentials. Sheets that are too hot, too uncomfortable, cheaply-made, or simply past their prime will negatively impact your sleep and therefore your health.
