EuroTop Mattress vs. Pillow Top Mattress: What They are and What the Difference is

If you’ve ever been mattress shopping before, you know there are Firm and Plush mattresses. These aren’t your only options though! Euro Top and Pillow Top mattresses were created to provide sleepers with additional plush yet supportive beds. What are these other comfort options? What’s the difference between the two?

What is a Pillow Top Mattress?

Long ago, your best option to make a too-firm mattress a bit softer was to add on a mattress topper. Now, there are Pillow Top mattresses which have an extra layer of padding sewn directly to the top of the mattress. The stitch attaching the extra layer to the mattress cover is placed just before each edge of the bed. If you are having trouble picturing it, imagine a giant pillow, resting on the top of your bed. That is where the name “pillow top” comes from!

You’ll love a Pillow Top mattress from the very first night. Reviews tell us that Pillow Top mattresses are initially effective at minimizing pressure points, relieving pain, and creating better sleep. Pillow tops can be found on all types of mattresses, but are most common on those with naturally firm support cores made from innerspring coils. This is ideal because then the mattress is both soft and supportive. The best Pillow Top mattresses provide pressure relief for heavier body parts, such as the hips and shoulders, while feeling comfortable all night long. The pillow top itself is generally crafted from softer materials in order to conform to your body with memory foam, latex foam, or wool. Mattress brand and type can affect the height of your bed. Most mattresses range from eight to 14 inches thick, but a pillow top can add at least two more inches.

City Mattress carries Pillow Top mattress options from top brands like Aireloom, Stearns & Foster, and Sleep Logic. We even have Pillow Top mattresses in our own City Mattress Parks Collection, because we know how well this type of mattress delivers a fantastic night of sleep.

What is a EuroTop Mattress?

EuroTop mattresses are technically a type of Pillow Top mattress because they have additional padding to enhance softness. Instead of being sewn on top of the mattress, the added padding in a Euro Top mattress is sewn within. The comfy layer is with the edges of the mattress, creating a stacked and uniform appearance. It also eliminates the gap between the extra layer and mattress cover in conventional pillow tops, which means less room for sinking and more room for padding. The result is a thicker, even more supportive bed. Like Pillow Top mattresses, Euro Tops are also made from a type of foam or wool and commonly found on innerspring mattresses to enhance cushion and pressure point relief.

If you’re interested in a Eurotop mattress, we recommend the Aireloom Joshua Eurotop mattress. This mattress is handmade in the USA. It starts with over 3” of plush Aireluxe™ foam for the loftiest yet most supportive night’s rest. With additional Visco elastic memory foam, this Euro Top mattress offers excellent relief of pressure points. Deep inside, the innersprings are individually wrapped, tempered 15-gauge coils inside a high-density encased perimeter for an unmatched combination of technology and sophisticated design.

How are They Different?

Have you guessed the difference yet? Both Eurotop and Pillow Top mattresses contain an additional layer of padding to increase comfort. This is how they are similar. The difference between the two lies in the application of this layer, creating a slight variation in both the feel and appearance of the mattress. Euro Top mattresses are different from standard Pillow Top mattresses because the extra layer of padding is stitched beneath the mattress cover rather than sewn to the top of it. Many times, Pillow Tops are softer while Euro Tops display a sleeker look.

Euro Tops are typically thicker and better at absorbing either your or your sleep partner’s movements. This makes them a fantastic option for anyone who frequently tosses and turns because they’re better at isolating motion than regular mattresses or even pillow tops. That being said, Pillow Tops are generally softer than Euro Tops.

Come to City Mattress to Feel the Difference for Yourself

If you are shopping for a new mattress and find that many options feel too soft or too firm, consider a Euro Top or Pillow Top mattress. These types of mattresses add an extra layer of plush cushioning to firmer feeling, often innerspring mattresses. This serves to increase soft comfort you love without diminishing the support you need.

Eurotop and Pillow Top mattresses vary in brand, materials, construction, and therefore, feel. To make the best choice, visit your nearest City Mattress location to feel and see them in person. Our Sleep Experts will help guide you to the perfect mattress for you.
