On average, we spend a third of our lives in bed, so finding the right mattress is the key to getting the sleep your body needs to function optimally throughout the day. Adequate and high-quality sleep is essential for physical and mental health.
Yet, not all mattresses are the same, and you need to find the one that is best for you. The best mattresses for your closest friends might not be the right ones for your sleep patterns. For instance, your friend swears by a pillowy, soft mattress that they can sink into while you might prefer one that offers a little more support. It’s very important that you take the time to familiarize yourself with mattress types and what feels most comfortable to you before making a significant purchase.
How to Find the Right Mattress
There are a variety of types of mattresses available. They come in different sizes and different levels of firmness. You can choose from twin, full, queen, king, and California king sizes. Support ranges from firm to plush and up to pillow top for the softest mattress. Types of mattresses include:
If sleeping flat doesn’t suit you, or if you share a bed with your partner who doesn’t sleep in the same position as you do, try out adjustable beds while you are mattress shopping. These platforms allow you to raise the head or foot of the bed to a customized and comfortable position.
To find your perfect mattress, we recommend visiting a nearby specialty mattress store and lying down on the different beds to try them out. Once you have chosen what you think is the most suitable mattress, and it has been delivered to your home, sleep on it for a period of time to ensure you have made an excellent choice. It will take time for your body to adjust to this new mattress, and we want you to take that time to ensure you made a good decision. Just like buying a new pair of shoes, your mattress needs time to become comfortable! This is why offering a mattress free trial period is so important.
Why You Should Try a Mattress Before Committing to It
As briefly mentioned previously, you don’t know exactly whether or not you’ll like a mattress before you sleep on it. Even if you’ve had a similar mattress in the past, the brand is a well-known one, and someone else told you they like it, you simply won’t know for sure until you sleep on it yourself. It’s important to note that you need more than one night to figure this out. You need more than a few nights!
On occasions, a mattress isn’t quite right, not because you don’t like it, but because of a small manufacturing issue. This is where your mattress warranty will be incredibly helpful. At City Mattress, we sell brands that offer some of the best warranty options in the industry. For example, PranaSleep offers a 10-year full and 20-year prorated warranty on our luxury mattresses. If there’s a defect with your new PranaSleep mattress, it will be covered by the warranty without issue. Other brands, including Vispring, Tempur-Pedic, and Sealy, offer their own versions of a manufacturer’s warranty.
How Long Is a Mattress Period?
The mattress that you purchased is brand-new when it arrives at your home. It hasn’t been laid on dozens or even hundreds of times like the ones you tried at the store. Your new mattress is going to take a little bit of time until it feels similar to what you liked about the floor model.
At City Mattress, we recommend giving your new mattress a full month to break in. After 30 nights, you’ll have a much better idea as to whether the mattress is the right one for you or not. You have a full 90 nights to decide. Don’t rush a decision this important!
What You Need to Do if You Want to Return Your Mattress
Don’t worry that it’s going to be a big hassle if you decide your new mattress isn’t the right one for you. We’ll gladly exchange your mattress as part of our 90 Night Comfort Guarantee. We want you to love your mattress and sleep well on it for years to come. If your first choice doesn’t offer the best sleep experience, we’ll work with you to find a better option. We are proud of our mattress trial because it’s one of the best in the industry!
At the time of your purchase, you’ll be given contact information for the Sleep Expert who helped you. If you’re unhappy for any reason during your first 90 nights, all you need to do is reach back out to the store you purchased the mattress from. Once we know you have tried it out for at least 30 nights and aren’t loving it, your Sleep Expert will get to work exchanging it for an option of equal or greater value. You will be charged a small fee for this, depending on the number of nights you tried the mattress. Between 30 and 60 nights, it's $150, and from nights 60 through 90, it is just $100.
Bonus: What Happens to a Mattress After You Return It?
After returning the mattress for one that is better suited to your needs, you are probably curious about what happened to the old mattress. Surely one that has barely been used isn’t simply thrown away!
Some brands are shipped back to the manufacturer. In other cases, the mattresses go to a clearance center. We clean, sanitize, and steri-fab the mattresses and stamp the labels that they are “secondary mattresses.” This is eco-friendly recycling in action that keeps mattresses from landfills. The mattresses in the clearance stores are marked down considerably because they are no longer deemed brand-new. Clearance store shoppers regularly save hundreds and even thousands of dollars off the original price of a new mattress for one that is slightly used. If you’ve ever slept in a hotel, you’ve spent the night on a bed that’s been slept in far more than a mattress in a clearance center. For shoppers who don’t mind the concept, it’s a fantastic way to get a top brand-name mattress at a more affordable price point.
Taking advantage of your mattress trial period is so important. A mattress is a big investment and not something you want to get wrong. With our 90 Night Comfort Guarantee, you won’t have anything to worry about! Be sure to visit one of our specialty mattress stores and shop all mattress options before you decide which one to have delivered.
