Frustrated woman in nightwear lays in squeaky bed with pillows covering her ears

You’ve had a long day, and you’re looking forward to nothing more than climbing into bed and falling fast asleep. You know your perfect slumber oasis is there waiting for you, ready to help you drift off into your dreams. You shower, read a book or listen to music, and then get into bed... only to hear a very irritating sound as you do so. You have a squeaky bed frame! Nothing ruins your peace and quiet like a squeaky bed. It makes it feel impossible to find a comfortable position because every time you move into a new position, your bed squeaks again. Don’t let this ruin your peace any longer!

Why Do You Have a Squeaky Bed?

There are few things more frustrating than the sound of a squeaky bed every time you move around. Thankfully for your health and happiness, it is actually quite easy to fix a squeaky bed. The first thing to do is to figure out why it’s squeaking. The squeaking is coming from either your mattress’s bed springs, the box spring, or the bed frame. To figure out if you have a squeaky mattress, you’ll want to push into different parts of your mattress and move around the bed until you can determine the general area.

If you have a latex mattress or memory foam mattress, you can automatically rule this one out. Since the springs in an innerspring mattress are not replaceable, if they are the cause of the squeaking, it’s likely time to shop for a new mattress.

If you weren’t able to find a squeak in your mattress, you might want to take a closer look at your box spring next. It’s worth noting that very few box springs have actual springs now. They have wooden slats instead, so this probably isn’t it. If you’re still not finding the source of the squeak, it’s coming from your bed frame.

How to Fix a Squeaky Bed Frame

Once you’ve narrowed the source of the squeaking down to the bed frame and know you need to know how to fix a squeaky bed frame, you have a few options available. One of the following tips and tricks is likely to fix the issue.

1. Check the Joints

Loose bolts are one of the most common reasons for a squeaky bed frame. This should be where you look first before trying more drastic measures. Take a quick look at your frame’s joints to tighten any bolts you find to be loose and wiggly.

2. Oil the Frame

If you have a metal bed frame, grab some WD-40 and apply it to the guilty joint. This isn’t the way to fix a squeaky wooden bed frame, though. If you have a wooden bed frame, try using beeswax or candle wax, as these are wood-friendly alternatives.

3. Use Cork as a Cushion

If you don’t want to use any sort of lubricant on your bed frame, try wedging bits of cork between the squeaky pieces to reduce the noise. The cork will cushion the two pieces, reducing the sound of the squeak. In many cases, noise can be caused by friction between the mattress and the bed frame, so this is a simple way to solve it.

If all else fails, you may need to buy a new bed frame. We have several options to choose from, including the very popular Knickerbocker Monster Bed Frame. This frame has seven heavy-duty glide legs with two-inch hardened steel side rails. All sections are double riveted for strength. Finally, you can say goodbye to your annoying, squeaky bed frame!

Understanding Bed Frames

When you’re trying to figure out how to fix a squeaky bed, it’s important to take a look at how the frame for your mattress impacts the noise and comfort levels. Bed frames come in different types of materials and structures that could help you improve any squeaks you hear as you drift off to sleep.

For instance, adjustable beds allow you to raise and lower the height to overcome common sleep challenges, such as snoring and back pain. Meanwhile, a platform bed could be your preference if you want a simple style that has fewer moving parts to contribute to squeaks. Either way, looking for the best mattresses to fit your needs can improve noise issues and provide higher-quality sleep.

As you explore your options for a quieter bed, it’s worth delving a little deeper into the types of bed frames that are available. Checking out the most common frames that people choose to support their mattress can help you find the best one to help you rest better each night.

Types of Bed Frames

Bed frames range from simple, streamlined designs to lush, upholstered options that increase the coziness of your bedroom. You might already be familiar with platform bed frames. These have a clean design that may be made from wood, metal or upholstered materials. People often prefer platform bed frames for the ability to opt out of needing a box spring. The flat surface on this frame can prevent mattress sagging that causes squeaks.

Metal bed frames are also known for their durability. Usually, metal frames consist of side rails with cross bars extending in the middle to support the mattress. Most metal frames also allow for the option of adding a headboard and footboard. Making sure that you have a sturdy box spring beneath the mattress can provide the support you need to end bed noise.

Upholstered bed frames are another option that people enjoy for the beauty they add to the space and their ability to halt mattress noise. The upholstered material helps prevent squeaks that often come from metal or wood frames. You may also find that this type helps hold the mattress in place better to halt movement that causes squeaking.

Storage bed frames are another solution for supporting your mattress to preserve its springs and cushioning. Some options resemble platform frames but include drawers or shelves. Others may have slat supports in the middle that require a box spring.

A mattress with squeaky springs inside likely needs to be replaced with a newer model. You might want to consider looking into a hybrid mattress or foam mattress for your next bed since these mattresses won’t run into the issue of a squeaky spring. Of course, if you love your mattress but it is simply growing older, you can always replace it with a similar but newer option. Over time, the wear and tear from sleeping and other bedtime activities can eventually result in a squeaky mattress; it doesn’t mean you chose the wrong mattress last time.
