Not quite a couch, but not exactly a bed either- a daybed is a mixture of the best of both. Daybeds have three sides, giving them the look and feel of a sofa if you sit on it. Without much effort at all, it is instantly transformed into a bed. It’s no wonder these convenient pieces have been popular for so many years! Are you thinking about getting one? We are here to answer the questions we hear more often about buying a new daybed.
What size mattress fits on a daybed?
Most daybeds are made to accommodate a standard twin size mattress. This means they are 38 inches wide by 75 inches long. Although they are not nearly as common, some daybeds are larger. These are designed to fit a full size mattress, which measures 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. Either way, you don’t need a special mattress, just one that meets the correct dimensions.
When is a daybed a good idea?
Daybeds are affordable, versatile, and available in several different styles. The reason that most daybeds are built for twin size mattresses is because they are used as a space-saving alternative to a large guest bed if you don’t often have people spend the night.
Many homes don’t have the extra space for a dedicated guest bedroom if overnight guests are rare. A daybed is perfect in a teen’s bedroom for sleepovers. You can place a daybed in your home office, den, or child’s bedroom. During the day, it acts as a place to read, relax, and watch tv. At night, it can be a comfortable bed to sleep on.
Does a daybed need a box spring?
No. Daybeds are designed with a sturdy foundation for the mattress. The weight of a box spring and mattress may be too much for the daybed to safely hold up. As well, daybeds tend to sit higher than most bed frames to accommodate either storage space or an additional trundle mattress. If a box spring is added, the mattress may sit too high on the frame.
What daybed options do you sell?
Daybeds are often made of either wood, fabric, or metal and have a foundation to support the mattress. We carry several choices from top brands like Hillsdale and Wesley Allen. With so many choices, it’s easy to find one that matches the style of your room.
Can I use a regular comforter on a daybed?
Yes and no. While you can use standard twin sheets on a daybed mattress, keep in mind that a standard twin comforter will not fit properly. This is due to the sides and back of the daybed frame. You want bedding made especially for a daybed. Don’t worry, you can get those directly through City Mattress at the same time you buy a new mattress and daybed frame.
Is a daybed cover different from the regular bed sheet?
Instead of a comforter, you want to outfit your daybed with a daybed cover. This is different from standard bedding sets because of its construction. A daybed cover will have slits on either side to make it easier to fit around the daybed frame. Also, daybed bed skirts only have fabric on three sides.
What are included in a daybed bedding set?
The easiest way to get all of the bedding you need for your daybed is to purchase it in a set. Daybed bedding sets consist of a comforter, three shams, and in some cases a bed skirt. These items will make the daybed look like a bed, providing a multi-layered look with coordinating bedding and pillows. We carry beautiful, well-made options from Madison Park. Whether you want the room to look beachy, subdued, bold, bright, or anything else- we have options to match!
How do I choose materials for my daybed cover and bedding?
You want to find bedding made from materials that are high-quality, beautiful, and comfortable. In this way, it’s no different than the linens you choose for your own bed! For many people, comfortable and beautiful means finding a cotton option. We also have wool, microfiber, and other choices as well.
