Is it Time to Replace Your Innerspring Mattress?

We spend ⅓ of our lives in bed. A wise person once said that this ⅓ affects the other ⅔, and they are right! If you’re not sleeping on the right mattress for you, this is detrimental to the rest of your life. Sleep is important for your health, happiness, and productivity. It’s quite possible it is time to replace your current innerspring mattress with something newer and better.

What is an Innerspring Mattress?

For decades, all mattresses were innerspring mattresses. Not only are innerspring mattresses the oldest type of mattresses in the industry, but they are also still the most commonly used mattress design out there and compare to hybrid mattress in popularity. Their name comes from what is inside- springs. An innerspring mattress uses a metal wire system combined with springs to create a frame. This is what gives the mattress its support. The frame is covered in fabric, foams, latex, wool, and other cushioning material for extra comfort.

Don’t look at this and feel that these mattresses are old fashioned or out of date. Their general construction remains the same, but innerspring mattresses have evolved over the years to be something really spectacular. Today’s best innerspring mattresses consist of a network of hundreds, or even thousands, of coils and springs. They feature varying gauges (thicknesses) and strengths. The stronger the coils, the firmer the mattress will be. The more coils you have within the bed, the better support it will provide for your body’s individual contour.

This new type of individually-wrapped coils provides sleepers with greater pressure relief and motion isolation. The layer of coiled springs is usually covered by a special comfort layer, often constructed from a type of foam. The coils also allow for airflow within the mattress. If you’re a hot sleeper, you may discover that an innerspring mattress will feel cooler than latex or foam, allowing you to “sink into” the bed.

How to Know it’s Time for a New Innerspring Mattress

You may look at the information above and think, “Wow- my mattress doesn’t have any of that!” It may be time for you to buy a new innerspring mattress. How can you know for sure? We put together a quick list for you:

Your innerspring mattress is over eight years old.

You put a lot of time and energy into finding the right mattress for you, and you found it! You’ve had night after night of restorative, blissful sleep on it. All good things must come to an end, and your mattress is one of them. Even if your mattress has served you well for the past decade, there comes a moment when it’s time to move on and say farewell.

Your innerspring mattress is sagging.

Sagging occurs when the coils in a mattress start to weaken. This sagging will only get worse, and it isn’t just about aesthetics. The sagging means you aren’t getting the support you need. If your innerspring mattress is starting to sag, it’s an obvious sign that you need to begin shopping for a new mattress.

You wake up with aches and pains.

If you wake up in the morning with back, neck, hip, or shoulder pain, this could be a sign that your innerspring mattress is not as comfortable or supportive as it should be. Even if your mattress isn’t more than a few years old, it’s time to replace it. It could be that you tried to spend as little as possible last time and as a result, got a poor-quality mattress that’s causing you pain.

You have a hard time falling asleep.

When you’re sleeping on the best innerspring mattress, sleep will be easy to achieve. On the other hand, if you’re tossing and turning in an attempt to find a comfortable position and sleep seems difficult to come by, it’s time for a change.

Your innerspring mattress makes a lot of noise.

Your innersprings are made from metal. Think of squeaking and screeching metal sounds as your mattress’s way of saying, “help me!” A noisy mattress could mean that the coils are starting to age and are no longer as supportive as before.
